Are you passionate about ensuring the sustainability of Sunderland’s seafront and that its remarkable heritage is protected?
Roker Pier & Lighthouse is due to launch public tours this autumn. We are looking for trustees to help guide and support the Charity during its foundation and development.
Since 2012, work has been ongoing to conserve, restore and open Roker Pier, Tunnel and Lighthouse to the public for the first time in the structure’s 113 year history. The restoration work is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Sunderland City Council and has seen the conservation of the lantern house, repair of the pier deck, extensive restoration of the lighthouse interior, repair of the tunnel floor and drains, and the improvement of access.
Following some final work to build an entrance structure, the tunnel and lighthouse will open to the public for the first time in the pier’s history.
In order to ensure that the attraction remains sustainable and the lighthouse does not fall into the same state of disrepair, a key element of this project is to establish a Trust to operate the tours and other associated activity.
Planning for tours of the tunnel and lighthouse is well underway in line with the Activity Plan produced as part of the HLF bid. A dedicated group of volunteers already exists and will begin delivering tours on completion of the restoration work and new entrance structure.
